“A Yiddish Winterreise” at Leeds Lieder Festival

Pro Musica Hebraica is delighted to share that the Northern English premiere of A Yiddish Winterreise will be performed Sunday, October 9th at the prestigious Leeds Lieder Festival, a biennial festival of art song. In A Yiddish Winterreise, Schubert’s classic love poet is reimagined as a Yiddish wedding singer fleeing the burning city of Vilna, who celebrates in song the richness of Jewish life and culture and explores the depths of Jewish suffering through time. The performance takes Jewish folk songs and turns them into lieder without stripping them of their original identity and beauty. British bass baritone Mark Glanville and pianist Alexander Knapp presented the American premiere of the extraordinary song cycle in Pro Musica Hebraica’s Spring 2011 concert.
