Concert Summary
This concert paid homage to the Golden Age of Cantors and to the liturgical music of modern times. The music traced a rich tradition of cantorial masterpieces capturing their fundamental duality: joy and despair, longing and redemption, from the deeply haunting “If I forget the O Jerusalem” to the wildly celebratory “Chad Gadya” of the Passover Seder.
They were sung by Cantor Netanel Hershtik, one of the great practitioners of the cantorial arts. From childhood, he has performed internationally with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and many of the world’s leading cantorial choirs. A veteran of the Israel Defense Force, Hershtik was the first cantor to be invited to perform at the U.N. in its 2006 Holocaust Remembrance ceremony.
He was joined in this concert by the Hampton Synagogue Choir and the distinguished Amernet Quartet.
